Immersive Theatre & Escape Rooms

On weekends, we keep finding ourselves in a locked room with no windows, a scattering of strange objects, dimly lit furniture and random artwork scattered along the walls. Fortunately, it isn’t the result of too many drinks the night before and accidentally breaking into other peoples homes, but a fascination for the recent proliferation of immersive theatre and escape rooms.

I swear.

It all began with immersive theatre performances. If you haven’t heard of them, it’s theatre that is well, immersive. Instead of sitting ancient Roman gladiator-style on raised levels of seating watching actors perform stories on a stage, the audience actively participates.

The level of participation depends on the production – you may walk and sit through the performances all around you – we went to an amazing Grimm’s Fairytales production in a 4-storey warehouse in Waterloo, we have travelled through 5 parallel universes for a 5 course dinner (twice I loved it so much) and another time we travelled to East London to a dodgy hotel full of tales.

It's amazing.

Once you’ve taken a hit on immersive theatre performances (it’s a drama kid’s gateway drug, I can’t deny) you then get into escape rooms, where a team of you solve a series of interactive puzzles and stories.

We have felt like Indiana Jones, cooed at robots, solved Ancient Roman codexes, swung capes, hidden in WW2 bunkers and flourished wands.

The trouble is, much like Dans le Noir (dining in the dark) you can’t tell anyone a lot of specific details about the experience in case you spoil the magic. That RunawayKiwi does have a cracking little guide though...

Have you done any immersive theatre or completed an escape room?
