A year ago we met here. We gathered amidst green boughs, tinkling teacups and marbled table tops. On the table champagne flutes sparkled, delicately dove grey striped crockery nestled arranged just so and green blooms drew the eye to the space left for our afternoon tea towers to occupy.
It is amazing how simultaneously so much, yet so little can change in 365 days .
Again a stone’s throw away the hustle and bustle of Tottenham Court Road, we drew our seats on a peaceful, secret terrace mostly still undiscovered by the marauding hordes of shoppers nearby.
On Dalloway Terrace we gathered to share our tales of challenges and toast our successes.
Opening a newly launched bottle of Perrier-Jöuet Blanc de Blancs champagne, we clinked to upcoming wedding anniversaries, new businesse ventures, developing careers and creative outlets. The Blanc de Blancs was a perfect bouquet of sparkling floral and citrus notes, and a lovely beginning to the afternoon.
Drawing many parallels with the literary-minded Bloomsbury set (though minus the more salacious shenanigans) we settled in for an afternoon of indulgence. Corralled by the one and only Angie Silverspoon, we gathered – Lauren of Lifestyle Diaries, Katie Kalanchoe, Ben the Twenty First Century Gent, Chelsea girl Mina from Kings Road Rocks and Gary the Foodaholic.
Our beautifully dressed waiters found themselves grinning again at the antics of the hashtag of bloggers snapping merrily away at, well, everything as they poured (and re-poured for photos) tea from the gleaming silver teapots and topped up our glasses of Perrier Jouët. But, we weren’t the only ones. Around us friends caught up, fiancees introduced their parents, ladies lunched and phones were whipped out for the occasional ‘gram.
Their chefs have updated the afternoon tea selection over time; with a classic summer picnic theme – sandwiches of smoked salmon and cream cheese, chicken and tomato, cucumber and egg and cress. We also specially requested a plate of two our favourite nibbles – the Doyle Collection hotel’s signature Guinness Bread a-topped with salmon.
Scones were lovely as ever – soft and fluffy, plain or fruited, Devonshire or Cornwall depending on your jam style preference. We won’t judge. Much.
The top tier was a summer medley; individual bramley apple and vanilla seed brulees, a delectable mango and passion fruit dome, a moist almond pistachio and financier, a rich chocolate and caramelised pecan slice, not to mention cream filled chocolate eclairs.
Since our first introduction to the beautiful Bloomsbury Hotel terrace, I keep finding myself back there with good friends; sipping spring gin cocktails, winter celebrations with moreish hot chocolates, brunch with a few lovelies, late afternoon nibbles and early evenings nestled around the beautiful downstairs bar.
