I can’t believe I’ve been freelancing for 6 months now. It’s been 6 months as my own boss, 6 months learning my way around working directly with clients, 6 months of being able to set my own agenda and 6 whole months of learning to understand what my own strengths and weaknesses are as a
This point was another marker, another waypoint in the journey, and I’m so pleased to have been developing a portfolio of lovely, interesting clients who are also challenging my creativity and helping me expand my skill base – and I’ve also picked up a few unexpected projects along the way to add to my CV and LinkedIn.
When I got to the 3 month mark, I wrote a list of 9 lessons that I had already started to learn, and I’m definitely still learning as I go along (anyone who thinks they’re too good to learn new things is crazy) but looking back, even in 3 further months, I’ve learned so much more.
I’ve written articles for a few really interesting publications, taken on some intriguing social media/marketing clients, narrowed down what I enjoy, been referred by my clients to other clients (the highest accolade), taken on the administration of a Twitter chat with 17,000 followers and unearthed skills that I can use across a variety of disciplines.
There are some things within the business I’d like to develop – writing a few more articles each month, taking on a couple more clients, upping my game, getting more disciplined about actually keeping to business hours and staying on top of my admin (something that every single freelancer I know struggles with) and write an actual business plan to start 2018 off the way that I mean to go on.
It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, because this isn’t a Hollywood movie, but every challenge I’ve approached with a logical solution and hope that things will balance out, and so far they have.
During these three months in addition to another few escapades I managed to sneak in a working weekend here…
…and there as a press guest…
…plus a spot of seal spotting on a writing retreat.
And, I’m tentatively excited for some of the plans I have in 2018. This time last year I was in a very different place, and if it wasn’t for my amazing cheerleading squad, I definitely wouldn’t be as happy as I am now. Thank you!
That said, it’s been another three months and I still haven’t sorted out my desk and my assistant definitely needs to be fired…
