A Surprise Break with WowTrip to Cologne, Germany

I simultaneously adore and loathe surprises. WowTrip wanted to send a group of us travel addicts bloggers to a surprise holiday destination, and I was curious to see how I as a type-A organiser would cope with it.

Disclaimer: We were invited guests of WowTrip but my images and words are all very much my own.

It couldn’t have been easier – we selected a date we could all do, sent over our passport & contact details and let the time run away in anticipation. It was like Christmas, but with the delicious excitement of wanderlust shimmied in. (To book WowTrip have a fabulously easy procedure; decide how much you want to spend, when you want to go, discard the destinations you’ve already been – the first is free, then £5 each for crossing off more destinations – and then wait with excitement for your surprise trip!)

The last totally surprise trip I did was a birthday present from Mr Kiwi, and we spent an autumnal weekend exploring Gothenburg in Sweden and I kind of enjoyed letting go of the booking reins.

All we knew is that we would be travelling to Europe for a long weekend, and our flights and hotel were taken care of. (We had advance notice of the time & London airport that we were travelling from.)

A few days before our trip we all received an email with a weather update and packing guidance – with a cheeky link if you wanted to peep (or like me, had to pre-print your boarding pass because of the specific airline we were flying with.)

Excitement was rife and guesses spread like wildfire as our excitement began to build. Luckily, I was able to keep the secret – though I’m not entirely sure how!

By the time we began to assemble at Stansted airport early on a Friday morning, we all knew that Cologne, Germany was our destination (and I was excitedly making plans with a friend who lives there who I’d been scheming ways to pop over and visit) and we had excitedly opened our city guide packs via email.

The packs gave a really helpful overview of the city with restaurants recommendations and everything you could need for a short city break. How much did we enjoy it? I believe the slightly tipsy smirk below says a thousand words…
