Like the brunch queen I am, I couldn’t help myself and put together a list of the best hotel breakfasts we have enjoyed so far around the world – they say “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper” and I can’t help but agree. These are all favourites for a myriad of reasons – and every single hotel that we stayed in and listed, has excellent coffee and was part of an adventure.
The locations vary from Texas to Cornwall, from Budapest to Gibraltar but all have beautiful food, something special about them, and I would love to revisit every single one of them for retesting purposes.
A good breakfast is just the ticket for a day packed with exploring and getting to know a city. Or, a leisurely start to a day of relaxation in the sunshine.
Best of British Restaurant with Rooms – The Vicarage, Cheshire
Served in the light-filled conservatory of The Vicarage in Cheshire, the menu was rather extensive but we just couldn’t resist the ordering a full English.
(Also, do any other couple have a breakfast pact to swap baked beans for black pudding? Our mid-air exchange amused a couple at the table next to us, and I even heard one of them remark that ‘it’s a much better idea than leaving the bits you don’t like on your plate’) Read more about our stay at The Vicarage Cheshire here.
Best view over 3 countries – The Rock, Gibraltar
Expect old-world tropical glamour, friendly welcoming teams and incredible views across Gibraltar harbour, the Spanish coast and all the way to Morocco. More about our stay at The Rock in Gibraltar to come shortly – just know we adored it.
Best Get Out Of Jail Free Feast – Malmaison, Oxford, England
Most people spend their lives avoiding situations that would put them behind bars. But true to past form, I actively researched the best way to get Mr Kiwi and I locked into prison – but it was at the luxurious Malmaison hotel in Oxford, rather than at her Majesty’s pleasure.
Breakfast the next morning was delectable. Obviously, I had to order the porridge (and a side of eggs bene) and to my unending delight, it was served in a proper prison-style tray…. read more about our fantastic stay at the Malmaison Oxford here.
Best French Toast View – Marina Bay Sands
This one I timed to perfection if I do say so myself – when I had planned a few days in Singapore, I knew there were only two hotels that I wanted to stay in. They couldn’t be more different in almost every way, and both of them fascinated me.
Setting my alarm for early the next morning (the BEST thing about jet lag) I threw my swimsuit and robe on and made my way back up to the 57th floor of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Watching the sun break over the horizon from a hot tub was pure bliss. There was a soft warm breeze before the day really heated up, so I made my way over to the pool for a few lazy laps – to be greeted with this pastel perfect city skyline. Cannily, I had pre-ordered room service breakfast to arrive as I finished up my swim, and spent a leisurely hour warming up on my terrace in the morning sunshine… read more about my stay at the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel here.
Sweetest – Salish Lodge & Spa, Washington State
Salish Lodge and Spa partner with local growers, purveyors and farms that bring them the highest quality ingredients that are served with full flavour, rather than a stuffy tableau. They even have their own apiary produces honey that is found on every menu, alongside their own homegrown herbs. Their breakfast was something incredibly special… read more about our stay at my stay at the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel here
Starting the day with relaxation – Hotel Moments – Budapest, Hungary
Set in the very pretty restaurant of Hotel Moments in Budapest, there was everything two hungry antipodeans needed. It was a typical spread including lashings of cereal, a pastry bar (including lovely fresh challah buns!), a lovely selection of local cheese, salmon rosettes, fried eggs, pear juice alongside more normal offerings and freshly chilled bubbly.
I’ve never really breakfasted with booze before, aside from in my younger days and brunch-style mimosas, and one morning it really was a nice treat before we visited one of the local spa baths. It really set the tone for a relaxing day, compared to the previous busy two… read more about our girls weekend at the Hotel Moments in Budapest.
Best breakfast use of a tiny flag – Steinenschanze Hotel, Basel Switzerland
Rolling out of my comfy Steinenschanze hotel bed in the Swiss city of Basel – the day that I ate 3 meals in 3 different countries – I wandered down to the garden level for a sunshine filled breakfast. Having had a sweet breakfast the day before (flaky croissants, passionfruit jam and fresh cherries) I took my time selecting a savoury spread to start my day of international traipsing. Best Boutique Breakfast – Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall, England
We could have feasted in the Scarlet hotel restaurant overlooking the lapping waves, but chose to laze in our room, soaking up as many droplets of R&R as we could. Cinnamon dusted baked apple with a vanilla cream followed rarebit toastie crowned with a runny egg – simply perfect. Read more about our Cornwall journey here.
Best Reason to eat quickly – Beaumont Ranch, Texas, US
The Beaumont Ranch is a resort complete with spa, but first and foremost it’s a working cattle ranch of 800 beautiful North Texas acres, complete with a herd of Texas Longhorns, horses, llamas, and other local wildlife. The ponds have otters and beavers playing in the waters and cheeky dogs gambol along the pond banks. We were even luckier than most because as it was an off-season Sunday we had the entire place to ourselves. Read more about our Texan adventures here.
