You know how you have Travel Dreams (the ones complete with capital letters) that you keep in your heart of hearts? Well, this one involves my passport, a reliable set of wheels and an enormous map of the States. One day, one day in the future we’d love to take a whole year off and pick up an RV or two as we travel on a USA road trip of a lifetime. Disclaimer: This post was commissioned by RVshare who are running an amazing Smoky Mountains RV trip giveaway – if you’re in the US, enter before the 1st July 2019!
It’s really difficult to pick only a few USA road trip highlights to fit into a single blog post – especially as a year would be an incredible amount of time to explore the continental US – so I’ve just selected a handful of the really meaningful things that we would love to see and do. They are mostly inspired by people that we adore, some of whom have hung out with me in London and shared some of their amazing homes with me via the medium of the internets. (You know who you are!)
We’ve already been to some US destinations – New York, Florida, Los Angeles, Seattle, Texas and Louisiana – where I’ve driven on the left-hand side of the road, but we would 100% love to return to all of these places, so I’ve excluded most of them just for the purposes of this dream post – we’d be so ready to don cowboy hats again and eat alllllll the Bar-B-Que!
I’ve also decided to roll West Coast to East Coast on this dream USA road trip itinerary, as by the end of the year we’d probably be pining for the tolling bell of Big Ben – but you never know… we may be too enraptured with the travel bug to fly home. Who knows…! (I’m overthinking this aren’t I?)
Amongst the many states we’d like to explore, we would love to go:
Hula Dancing in Hawaii
My lovely friend has now left Hawaii, but her glorious adventures have lit a fire for us to travel to these volcanic isles. We have dreams of tropical beaches, exploring the Hawaiian National Volcano Park and the fresh flavours of a freshly caught Poke bowl or 3. And, we wouldn’t have to get all James Bond and drive submarine-like via the ocean bed (mostly because it’s not possible) to get back to mainland US – with the RV Share company, we could pick up and hire a luxurious rental whilst there, explore, drop it off again and fly over. How easy is that?

Fluttering in Las Vegas, Nevada
The bright lights beckon (we almost became high-rollers when we had a family wedding in Vancouver, but going whale watching just off the coast of Seattle narrowly stole our hearts) and we would love to scoot over to Las Vegas for a week of incredible shows, a wander into the casinos, and who knows, I might convince Mr Kiwi to marry me again in a shotgun ceremony presided over by a fake Elvis. Anything is possible, right?
Navigating New Mexico
One of my sweetest expat friends here in the UK hails from New Mexico, and I would love to time our USA road trip for when she was home visiting her family, and catch up with lots of the lovely people we met at her Yorkshire wedding. We could park up our RV near her Mom’s house*, explore the Land of Enchantment and try the Hache green chile that turns her eyes misty when she talks about home.

Croon through Colorado
To (slightly mis-)quote the words of John Denver:
Now he walks in quiet solitude, the forest and the streams, seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight is turned inside himself, to try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake
And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high, I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky
The shadows from the starlight are softer than a lullaby
Rocky Mountain high, Colorado. Rocky Mountain high.
The Rocky Mountain National Park has over 300 miles of hiking trails, colourful wildflowers, and wildlife including moose and black bears. I’m already entranced.
Wander through Wyoming
We would love to really explore the glory of Yellowstone Park – doesn’t this image by Grant Ordelheide just say it all?
Marvel at the Sculptures in Minnesota
For years I’ve gently teased another lovely expat friend about everything under the sun – so it would only be fair on our USA road trip to visit the city where she grew up – and I believe we’d get to see a rather familiar blue cockerel statue too…

Roadtripping to Ohio
Not only would I adore to drop in on my lovely blogger friend Audrey on our USA road trip, but I would love to spend time in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park which lies along the Cuyahoga River between the Ohio cities of Cleveland and Akron. One of the places I would love to visit is the towering Brandywine Falls – isn’t it beautiful? (Fun fact: in Lord of the Rings, the Brandywine river divides the Shire from Buckland and Bree-land.)

Tinkle the Ivories in Tennessee
With our love of music, there is no way that we could miss driving an RV to Nashville – visiting the Grand Ole Opry House, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the hugs of another friend who has just moved back there with her family. Oh, and who could forget the glorious peaks of the Smoky Mountains? I’m sure we would adore getting lost there, especially with our home safely with us the entire way.
Dancing back to New Orleans
Oh, New Orleans. You stole my heart – the liquid notes of Frenchman Street, the sweetest concierge in all of the world (he was thrilled that we were visiting his rather off-the-beaten track hometown) and of course the slightly terrifying thrill of floating through alligator-filled Bayous.
Goodness me, researching and writing this USA road trip post has sparked an overwhelming amount of wanderlust.
Where in the USA would you want to point your RV (or motorhome for my UK readers) towards? We’re talking dream trip here, so go crazy in the comments below!
