My friend and I have explored Christmas markets around the UK, solved innumerable escape rooms together, and have a joint love of festive afternoon teas. So I knew exactly who I wanted to hang out with whilst trying this year’s Christmas afternoon tea with a London view – up on the 31st floor of The Shard. Disclosure: We were guests of Aqua Shard but all festive puns and wayward musings are always my own.
We met over the internet after she moved from Sydney to the land of almost endless drizzle – and we bonded in only the way that two expats, adrift from their home continent can.
We bonded over coffee, cherry coconut chocolate and exploring the literary treasures that England has. Since then we’ve become fast friends – enough to travel over the UK and Europe together exploring cat hotspots. (The latter bit is a joke, mostly.)
So, in this adventure we sat in amongst the clouds, admiring the London skyline as the champagne bubbles (Veuve Clicquot ‘Yellow Label’ Brut Champagne – with an option for Rosè) flowed and the tea leaves brewed.
Our tea stand (and accompanying plates) came laden with a host of festive flavours.
Our sandwiches – cranberry, turkey & lettuce; fig chutney & brie; roasted peppers, aubergine & hummus on brown bread; a cheese & pickle sandwich and our joint favourite, the egg & black truffle sandwich.
Our savouries also included a delectable miniature crumpet with smoked salmon.
Our scones came with a festive homemade cranberry & apple jam Cornish clotted cream which we slathered on with festive glee.
The crowning tier is delicious and sprinkled with festive flavours. But, actually (mostly as I don’t know if you’ve been naughty or nice) I’m not going to tell you what they are – you’ll just have to discover for yourself. They were delicious, nibbled at lightening speed.
Then the photobomber got photobombed.
We leisurely took in the view, watching the world go by as the River Thames wound below our feet. We had a prime spot for boat spotting, and with a touch of my zoom lens realised we had a prime view of the Tower of London ice skating rink, all set up for Christmas festivities.
This Christmas afternoon tea with a London view at Aqua Shard is only available Monday – Friday until the 30th of October, so get your skates on! (Pun intended.)
What’s your favourite afternoon tea tier?
