10 of the best cat cafes in the world

I have a confession to make. I have a full blown cat addiction, and, I’m not even sorry. Those soft little ears, twitching tails and indifferent faces cast a spell that have us dashing around the globe and visiting enough cat cafes to have a shortlist of 10 of the best cat cafes in the world. All the while a sleepy little tabby cat snoozes at home in London…

The Best Places Long Weekend in Budapest Adventures of a London Kiwi

Once we’ve booked flights and perused hotels, Google searching for a cat cafe is one of the first things I do – and I’ve been accused of carrying out those 3 tasks in a slightly different order. It’s something I can neither confirm nor deny, but we do have a rather high hit rate of booking accommodation close to cat cafes. I’ll just leave that there, shall I?

9 things you have to do on a Cologne City Break

    Dear planning shy travellers,

Cologne in Germany is the perfect destination for a long weekend city break.

(Nb: I write Cologne, Germany to ensure that the whole London/Tower Bridge confusion doesn’t happen – years and years ago an American millionaire thought he’d bought the beautiful Tower Bridge, but actually bought the rather more plain London Bridge and transported every stone all the way to the desert in the US…)

A Surprise Break with WowTrip to Cologne, Germany

I simultaneously adore and loathe surprises. WowTrip wanted to send a group of us travel addicts bloggers to a surprise holiday destination, and I was curious to see how I as a type-A organiser would cope with it.

Disclaimer: We were invited guests of WowTrip but my images and words are all very much my own.

It couldn’t have been easier – we selected a date we could all do, sent over our passport & contact details and let the time run away in anticipation. It was like Christmas, but with the delicious excitement of wanderlust shimmied in. (To book WowTrip have a fabulously easy procedure; decide how much you want to spend, when you want to go, discard the destinations you’ve already been – the first is free, then £5 each for crossing off more destinations – and then wait with excitement for your surprise trip!)

Travel Bucketlist Goals: 3 meals, 3 countries, 1 day

For the longest of stretch of time, I’ve wanted to have 3 meals in 3 countries in a single day. There’s an air of romance about being able to slip between nations in search of delicious food, and the ability to pop between Switzerland, France and Germany was simply too hard to resist whilst exploring Basel.

Disclaimer: My whole trip was supported by the Basel and Alsace tourism boards (thank you!) but this particular scheme was dreamed up all on my own…

If I’m being super honest, it was also ridiculously easy. The joy of EU nations having visa waiver agreements meant that all I had to do was look up which modes of transport I’d need to use to hop across the border. Forget the Bonnie and Clyde shenanigans for once…

A day trip to Wendelstein Mountain & getting lost in the Bavarian Alps (sorta)

Visiting a freezing cold Berlin in November (mostly for the Christmas markets) a few years ago we always swore that a return trip to landlocked Germany was something we had to do. When friends told us of the misty Alpine peaks of Bavaria and generous beer gardens of Munich, we mentally notched a visit to München into our travel bucketlist and promised ourselves we would get there one day.

That promise of ‘one day’ turned into years, until summer this year and we fancied a relaxing week in sunshine. Planning to spend a week in Munich (several friends said 3 days is plenty, but I disagree) gave us more than enough time to factor in several days trips (including swimming in an alpine lake near Neuschwanstein Castle) which unconditionally made our break lovely.

Putting down my book and scrolling through ‘alpine day trips from Munich on my phone from the comfort of our hotel room, google came up with the peak of Wendelstein as a viable option.

Vague plans made – we google mapped it and figured we could just find a local pub if it all went awry – we hopped onto one of the regional services (the Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH or BOB). After skirting around a beautiful lake we panicked a little when the train carriages split in a train station and we lost sight of our destination, dashing to which end we assumed was better (based mostly on following locals rugged up in hiking gear) which luckily delivered us safely.

Bowling off at the Osterhofen station, we stopped for a minute to breathe in the clear air and listen to the contented moos of a local herd.

Watching the sports mad locals unfold their hiking sticks and uncap their beer bottles (seriosuly) as they strode up along rocky paths, at that point we realised that we’d definitely gone off
map. Luckily spotting a small cut-through path wending under the train
station and over a trickling stream, we found the cable car that winched us up 2,000 metres literally into the clouds.

The grey morning lifted as we got higher up the mountainside, revealing a breathtaking vista (and distracting me from the heart palpitations of the admittedly smooth cable car ride).

I may have hummed ‘there is a coffee castle on a cloud’ unashamedly as I brandished my caffeine hit and read my book whilst the boy walked further up to the summit for even better views.

It was one of the best things I’ve ever found on the internet – a morning of clear air and peace amongst the clouds and forests.

Ps. Our visit to Munich and the clear alpine waters around Neuschwenstein Castle with a touch of tourist dodging, both definitely were so much joy!)
